Changing times: full dentures aren’t what they used to be

Do you remember Granny’s false teeth? You’ll probably never forget the bulky, plastic looking contraptions that made her look a little non-human every time she opened her mouth. This image comes to many people’s minds when they realize they are going to need full dentures.

If you always dreamed of growing up to look just like Granny, you might be a little disappointed, but the truth is, we just don’t make dentures like that anymore. At least, here at Big Smile Dental in Chicago we don’t. You might still find the old-fashioned, fake look at some dental offices, but we use state-of-the-art materials and advanced smile design techniques to create natural looking, cosmetic dentures.

Some people don’t believe that our dentures are that good. After all, we have been a leader in Chicago dental care for nearly three decades. Many of the faces you see when you walk down the street every day are our patients. Yet, you have probably never seen a set of dentures that really look good, right? That is because many of those beautiful, “natural” smiles you have admired don’t have a real tooth in them. They are full denture plates from Big Smile Dental, and you never knew it!

Dentures vs. Implants

Dental implants are quickly becoming the preferred method of tooth replacement. They are stable, comfortable, and beautiful. Until recent years, they were also impractical for replacing more than a few teeth. Today, we have special techniques developed just for denture wearers. Only a few implants are needed to stabilize a full denture, which is fitted with special attachments. You get the best of both worlds – the economy and simplicity of dentures, with the benefits of implants.

Are you a good candidate for full dentures?

Once all of your teeth are gone, there’s no getting them back. Full dentures are usually the only practical option. If you still have some teeth, they will have to be extracted to get dentures. This might be the best option if those teeth are too badly damaged for lasting restorations.

In many cases, techniques such as crowns, veneers, and bonding can save your existing teeth. Partial dentures, bridges, or crowns (with implants) can replace only the missing teeth. Your dentist will evaluate the strength of existing teeth, and explain your options.

Don’t worry if the thought of wearing dentures makes you feel old. No one has to know – we’ll keep your secret, and they’ll never guess. For dentures you’ll love, call Big Smile Dental today at 773-772-8400.
